NTUSER.DAT "copying error"
Received a "copying error" while attempting to backup my laptop's C: drive to a newly purchased external hard drive. The rest of message said "It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs using the file and try again." Have since googled the error message and found NTUSER.DAT is an essential registry item/file not to be tampered with. How then can I successfully backup all my C: drive files? I need to send this laptop out for repair asap before any further problems occur on the PC and I lose my files which I am attempting to backup. Thanks so much. Mark typerdude55 in Colorado

Re: NTUSER.DAT "copying error"

NTUSER.DAT is the Windows system file that holds all of your profile registry settings, so when you are logged-in and using the computer it cant copy (because it's open/in use). The easiest thing to do is instead of copying your entire "User" folder under Documents and Settings, only copy/backup your "My documents" and maybe "desktop" folders, and any other photos like "my photos" - this will get a backup of only your data-files/folders without that NTUSER.DAT file.

OR You could log-on as a different user with Administrator rights, then copy your entire User-folder for your other account - but this is more complicated. There is a lot of discussion about NTUSER.DAT in this post: NTUSER.DAT File

I am logged in as local administrator, and ntuser.dat keeps killing the copy anyway.

Thank you "hubby" thank you, thank you, thank you... I solved my problem.
I tried to copy "user" folder and I failed.
I tried to copy "Hosung" folder but I failed again.
Finally, following your advise, I tried copy sub folders under "Hosung" folder and I WIN!
Thank you again...
