NTUSER.DAT moving Documents and Settings

I am trying to copy my documents and settettings to an extenal HD but it wont move NTUSER.DAT because it is in use. Do I need to move it? Or, how do i turn it off so it is not running in the back round? Sounds to me like that can not be done. I am about to install a legal XP and dont want to lose what I have on my HD, so I am copying most of my c drive to my external. There are several files that wont go over because they are running in the back.

Re: NTUSER.DAT moving Documents and Settings

NTUSER.DAT contains all of your user-registry settings so it's helpful to get a copy with your other stuff for if you ever need to do a full-restore; this file contains things like personalizations in your programs, etc, but no actual "user data".
Because Windows loads this file when you are logged-on you cant move or copy it, so the best thing to do would be to log on as another user (with full administrative rights) and copy the files that way (then, the other user's NTUSER.DAT will be loaded instead)
OR
Just copy your "My documents", "Desktop", etc, instead of the entire "Documents and Settings" but then you run the risk of missing something.

Thanks for your reply, I wasnt registered when I posted the question above. I am now.
So, will the same fix work for all the other files that wont copy to the external drive because they are in use?

i'm not sure offhand what else would be in use while you're logged-in, but, if you log in as a different user, say USER X, none of USER Y's files should be in use and you should be able to copy them all..
