'This profile no longer exists' in the edit friends section ?!?

This was mentioned in another thread, but I wanted to make a new topic to see if this was a new issue. Currently a bulletin is going around with the following text;

" Hackers In Your List
I thought this was BS until I went to Edit friends and deleted 30 and Im not kidding, of these profiles!!! I had never seen this before in my Edit Friends list. Check it out and get these hackers off of your friend's list!!!!!

Go to your friends list hit edit friends and you will see gray boxes with red X's and next to them they will say "DELETED -This profile no longer exists" DELETE THEM!!! they are hackers and everyone has them so please go delete them!"

Besides getting the bulletin, have others encountered the problem. More specifically, can people with only a few friends, but have been on a while confirm them. I have two suspicions.

1) The profiles were either deleted a long time ago for being fake (spammers or fan music sites using a bands name and music). While they don't show up in the 'view all friends' section, they do seem to appear in the 'edit friends' section. I tried using some of the old photograph viewing URL/hacks and one a couple I saw in my profile it seemed to be a few pics of a band that I vaguely remember.

2) Typical myspace errors that if the profile is not immediately viewable then a 'no longer exists' error is given. I'm afraid if this is the case that I'd delete an active friend. Sometimes if you have a lot of people on a friend list (members in a large club, bands, etc) you won't readily notice a particular missing friend.

Since nothing detrimental seems to be happening, I' leary about deleting any of the profiles marked 'this profile no longer exists' until I learn as to what is actually causing this. The bulletin just seems to play on 'hacker' fear and social engineering (like old virus hoaxes that would have you delete a real file on your system).

Ideas as to the cause of this and any potential solutions?

Re: 'This profile no longer exists' in the edit friends section

I don't know the cause, but I will tell you that I have been on myspace since last March and typically, only add people I know to my profile, so my friend list is fairly small.....I found 4 of the gray boxes on my "edit friends" and all my friends were still there that should've been....so I'm not sure how those boxes got there unless it was some kind of hack or some new issue with myspace because the last time I deleted people from my list was about 2 months ago, and I have looked at my edit friends since then to see if I wanted to delete anyone else that I don't talk to, and I didn't see the gray boxes then!!  Weird!

I deleted about 10 of them.  Before I deleted them, I googled the friend IDs to see if they came up.  Not many did, but they were ones I'd had for quite a while....don't know.

Re: 'This profile no longer exists' in the edit friends section

Here's a blog post I just got from someone I subscribe to on Myspace. He's pretty good with this stuff so I trust him....but too late for me-I already deleted 60 friends. Oh well--better to be safe than sorry I guess!

DO NOT delete profiles showing up as
Category: MySpace

The below is a bulletin going around that I've gotten several messages about:

Subject Lines:
"Get Rid of Those Pesty Hackers and Virus's..."
"Delete those hackers from your account"
"Here's a retarded bulletin with bogus info in it!!! Pass it on!!!!!!1"
etc...

Body:
"Go to your friends list hit "edit friends" and you will see gray boxes with red X's and next to them they will say "DELETED -This profile no longer exists" DELETE THEM!!! they are hackers and everyone has them so please go delete them!

Also don't stop there go into your comments & messages and delete the ones there that have the same box with the red X...also people need to delete the comments that have the smiley face which says PROFILE WATCHER because their friends didn't post it the hacker did and then go look under edit profile and see if there's anything unusual that was not put there by you and delete it.....After you get all of that done you should go into account settings and put a new password in....Because more likely then not the hacker has gotten your password...So change it!!!!"

*Yawns*

This is a typical gram-of-truth/metric-ass-load-of-bull-pucky-rooney-toot-tooty MySpace bulletin.

1. DO NOT delete profiles showing up as deleted.
The "This Profile No Longer Exists" image / text is sometimes shown on accounts that have simply been flagged for spam. Normal people get flagged due to spammers sending stuff out from their accounts after phishing their passwords via spoof log-in pages. Or, after a worm or other script sends spam from their accounts. Innocent people usually have their profiles fully restored eventually, but deleting those "This Profile No Longer Exists" accounts can inadvertently remove actual friends from your list who just happen to be flagged as spammers at the moment.

Yes, percentage-wise most of the profiles showing up like that are actually spam accounts - NOT "hackers". Those accounts will eventually be completely flushed from MySpace's database if they are indeed spam accounts and not innocent people who have been flagged. And, having them on your friend list in the meantime is completely harmless.

2. The profile watcher comments should be deleted. That part is true. If it's one of the "undeletable" ones: I'm pretty sure that you can remove it via safe mode.

Homepage >>> Profile Edit >>> Safe Edit Mode >>> Comments

3. Yes, you should remove any code from your profile that you didn't put there. No shit, Sherlock.

4. Yes, you should change your password fairly often. And, quit falling for spoof log in pages. ;-)

Re: 'This profile no longer exists' in the edit friends section

Well, I sure wish I had read this before I deleted 18 accounts. But then I never saw them until yesterday. And I go to the "edit friends" page often because I find it easier to look through than the regular friends page.

I had already reposted the bulletin I got, but I am posting a correction.

Huh...so I shouldn't have deleted all those profiles?

Re: 'This profile no longer exists' in the edit friends section

All I know is that I deleted 15 gray boxes after I saw the message, since I know that I normally have 121 friends. I know this, because each time I add someone I remember the amount of friends and the last number was 121. When I looked today it said 136 which is very unusual and very different from my last number of 121 from the last time I added someone. Geek, can you please let us know what you think regarding this? Is it bogus or not? Thanks in advance!

Re: 'This profile no longer exists' in the edit friends section

I had deleted 10, then after reading how they shouldn't have been deleted, I went to my mail and started clicking on the gray boxes that were there.  Some of them were coming up with that invalid id message, but not all.  I had a couple that were gray, but went to live profiles.  Bands that for whatever reason were flagged.
