Raccoons - ergh!!!!

So yesterday morning I was out in the yard talking to the gardener and I notice that the edge of our grass all the way around our half circle drive way has been pulled back a few inches exposing dirt. I am confused...I thought I won the battle with the gofer? But it doesn't look like the mounds Hank leaves (yes he has a name since my son and I have been intimately involved with trying to kill him for over a year: current score Us:3 Hank:7). Still perplexed I point it out to the gardner who says it's raccoons pulling back the edge of the lawn looking for worms to eat in the ground. I'm thinking "Damn...can't they just go after the garbage?!?" So anyone now anything about raccoons and how to stop them from pulling up our grass short of building a wall around the front of our property (which I will do)?

Darn....I was hoping that I could just poison them or something? Maybe make my grass taste yucky? Catching them won't work since we live in a somewhat rural area and I'm sure there is a whole slew of them to replace the ones I catch...bummer!

Motion lights?! Yes that might work!

Motion lights won't work at all. I have raccoons and they stroll right by them w/out a care in the world...

Careful with the little critters- we had a family of them get into our basement and while removing them I managed to get a small bite. Being a nice guy I did not want to kill a baby raccoon for simply defending himself so I just took them somewhere else and released them.

I then realized that rabies is a death sentence if you get it and went to the hospital to get checked- multiple shots and $4K later I am now immune to rabies.

Moral- either have them professionally removed or leave them alone!

Re: Raccoons,,,ergh!!!!

Very true! They should only be handled by someone who knows what they are doing and has the proper protective gear (handling gloves and sleeves, etc.) I remember being suprised to learn that there are more cases of rabies in raccoons than bats! And that there is approx. 52 raccoons per square mile and on average about 32% of raccoons caries the rabies virus (that's pretty good odds that you may run accross an infected one sometime) the handling of these animals should be left to someone who is properly trained and equiped to handle them.

It is a complete myth that 52% of raccoons carry rabies. I feed over 150 of them and in 15 years have never once had one with rabies. Skunks are the most prevalent carrier and even with them you can most of the time tell if they have it. If a Raccoon does have rabies it will be either extremely sluggish or extremely aggressive and when they get the virus, they usually die within 10-12 days.

Excellent trap.  It netted a woodchuck for us last summer!

Mr.Pants works in a city that has trees everywhere and is notorious for them. It is a quaint little town with a lot of rich old people and they call 911 on raccoons all the time. Yes...on raccoons! And because it is a town with money he actually has to go...makes for great stories though!

There are some good suggestions on this page, this being my favorite, lol

"Wolf urine is considered by some people to be a rather effective repellent of raccoon. Obviously, raccoons smell the urine and think bad thoughts; thoughts of being torn limb-from-limb by a pack of hungry wolves. I can't personally vouche for this method, but it makes sense if you think about it."

My sister had trouble with them breaking into her garbage, she picked up some supersonic noisemaker thingamajig, I guess you could edge your property with them....

Good times and riches and son of a beeeiotches, I've seen more than I can recall"
