You don't have to make the diamond the central stone in the ring, if you don't want to. My sister went the "cheap wedding, buy a house" route, and LOVES her sapphire with diamond accents. (It's a lot more blue than the picture really shows) No, it's not a traditional engagement ring, but who's "traditional" anymore, anyway. My point is, get what makes YOU happy, don't just get something because you feel like you're supposed to get a diamond. If you think an emerald would look better on your finger, or a ruby, or whatever, don't limit yourself.

Didn't this all get started back at the end of WW2? Maybe I dreamed it. Wherever it came from, I wish the tradition used something a bit less expensive. Why did it have to be a diamond? It could have been a piece of creek gravel.

Clearly, you are not paying attention to the commercials. A diamond is forever. And if you don't cry or run out to the store and buy a diamond after one of those commercials... well then, you're a monster.
And if I knew had to post a picture, there would be one of the gingerbread man from Shrek.

LOL Stevie.... Hubby-to-be would agree with you. I'm not a high maintenance girl.. at all! I'm in T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers almost everyday... My make up is minimal and most jewelry I wear comes from the discount/bulk stores (i.e. FAKE) lol My hair is usually only straightened or blow dried if I"m going out... so I'm kinda tomboyish you could say. BUT I want that diamond... I don't know. If Hubby-to-be gives me a peice of gravel on a band, I think I'll have to go ninja on him.
