Cellphone help: Make your own cellphone ringtones

This page is not a complete tutorial on how to make ringtones. We will give you the basic idea of what is necessary, along with links to software, websites, and free-ringtones. The information below should work with most brands of cellphones, including: Verizon (LG), Motorola, Nextel, Nokia, Sprint, NEC, Qualcomm, Ericsson and others.

The basic steps to make your own ringtones

  • You will need audio editor software. Some are free such as Audacity or Garageband (comes with new Macs)
  • You will need the source of the ringtone such as an MP3 file or WAV
  • Using the audio editor of your choice, edit the lenght of the MP3 or WAV down to 15-20 seconds. This will be the actual ringtone. Note that some older phones only support MIDI type files.
  • Transfer the ringtone into the cellphone. Usually you will need a cable that connects your PC to your cellphone. On some phones you can use a Bluetooth connection if your cellphone and computer both support it - you may also be able to email the MP3 to your phone from your PC.
  • Using software for your particular phone, transfer the edited MP3 into the proper location in your cellphone. For some phones you may need to convert your WAV into MP3 for it to work.

Ringtone Creation Software

If you're willing to spend a few dollars you can purchase software to help you easily create ringtones for your phone. Better programs (like the ones you pay for) also let you add wallpapers, songs, and videos (if your phone supports it). Shop around before buying a ringtone creation program and if possible try one with a 'free trial' period before purchasing to make sure it works the way you like.  If you have an iPhone you can make your ringtones for free using GarageBand and iTunes.
