Re: Rock vs. Metal

i'd give the term psychedelic rock more to a band like Cream and early Floyd...

hmm..punk rock...i'd say that originated more from garage bands...

oh and The Ramones are from my neck of the woods (they're actually from the neighborhood where i am right this very minute)...punk was established in both the UK and the US

Yeah, to go back to your original question- I'd say metal originated in the UK.

metal in america is often credited to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Sabbath was originally a not so successful blues band named Earth.  in high school, Ozzy was an underclassmen that the rest of the band members used to enjoy picking on.

Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi is often credited for writing every heavy guitar riff known in the metal world, and he did it all with only two fingers.  when working at a factory he lost the tips of his middle and ring finger.  he would play with leather thimbles and tune his guitar down to C# for less string tension on his fingers and which also gave Sabbath its signature evil sound.

I knew one of you guitar playing guys would remember the details better than I would...

Unfortunately the are so many sub divisions of each genre - Heavy Metal, Black Metal, Thrash Metal, Punk Rock, Hard Rock, Classic Rock, etc, the list could go on forever. So the question is quite broad. However i will throw out to words that helped put heavy metal (at least) on the map.

Iron Maiden. One of the best metal bands ever and yes they are from the UK.

Iron Maiden rocks and are definitely heavyweights in the metal genre.

Vash has it right pretty much

Sabbath was the first strait metal band around, and it was their sound that shaped what the genre of metal would become. Sorry to disagree with some of you here but Zeppelin is not a metal band, they're a hard rock/blues band. Thats not a knock on them at all, they're arguably the best band ever and certainly the most influential rock band ever but they're sound is not the same as what sabbath had brought out. They're much more pure blues based and they had taken stuff that was already around , only to a whole new and much better level, whereas no one really sounded like Sabbath before them. Thank god for both though, two of the best bands of all time and without them we woulnd't have most of the stuff we like to listen to now
