Should I reformat my computer?

I got a severe/serious warning that I had a Trojan and spyware/malware, defender and Norton quarantined it. I don't know where it went but I have never been able to find it to tell others what it was. my computer has been doing down hill since. I have paid for others to run virus scanners, etc on the system. I can get into websites, but once there it will not all me to click on links. I guess I also have hard drive issues. I do not know what to think. or how to do what I need without copying any bad stuff with it along the way! I ordered a new hard drive, and back up drive. I have them both now. I have moved since I bought this computer and most likely do not have or do not know where they would be of all my programs and their keys. I am afraid to do anything.....I really do not want to bring any bugs with me! even tho they seem undetectable something is still very wrong here!

I also ordered a recovery disc but was unaware I needed a windows disc. maybe since I had to pay for it, it will come in the box. if not, well.......

I want to start to get my files but am also afraid. I cannot get this bug back!

so do you think reformatting will solve this issue or do I still need to try reformat before replacing my drive. I will lose everything. are the program keys somewhere in the system i can find?

please get back to me soon, I need to fix things!

thanks

Re: Should I reformat my computer?

let me just throw this out there: You may want to consider professional help, especially if anything/data that you might lose is important. Otherwise, if you enjoy tinkering/learning, then carry on..

Generally, you can safely backup/copy/move your DATA without bringing along anything bad, especially if you have run an antivirus and check all files first. Be sure that you only move your DATA not "everything" (if you don't know what that means, consider my recommendation for professional help).

also, usually, the 'recovery disc' is also the "windows disc', unless your manufacturer is super cheap.

Reformatting the entire thing will likely take care of everything. Just be sure to back up your data first. Not sure what program keys you are talking about - if you mean specific key-codes to install specific software, you will need those to reinstall that software. Your Windows keys are usually on a sticker on the computer or Widows/recovery disc.. unless, again, you have a super-cheap (not good) hardware manufacturer.

There is no simple, easy answer.. But I will give you this one additional piece of advice: CONSIDER a Mac, iPad, or Chromebook and you will never have to deal with this kind of thing again.

Re: Should I reformat my computer?
its a Toshiba. my daughter has also told me to get a tablet/pad of whatever. she thinks that will help me keep from getting bugs. but for now I have my laptop. I will make an effort to go into safe mode and back up my pics and docs and any music if its on there. this all started from facebook, one day it just went nuts! its been a battle ever since. good thing I kept this older computer around! I just paid 149.00 to geeks on site and they remotely checked my stuff. get this..... they will not help me for free now! what a rip off they are! oh they did recommend someone coming to my house, but after 1.5 hrs I have to pay $99/hr! you would think the 149 I already paid would be good enough! I know it will take longer than that to do what all is necessary here! there is a local place I called they want $125 and if it doesn't work its free. but I have invested so much already I cant afford that right now. especially with the new purchases! thanks for getting back to me!

Re: Should I reformat my computer?

I 2nd the recommendation for a Chromebook, iPad/Android Tablet or a Mac .. Each is different, and all are different from Windows (ie; you have to learn to use it).. but just imagine: Never worry about all that stupid virus stuff again and just USE it!

Re: Should I reformat my computer?
yes when I can afford it later down the road I will something. for now I will try and get this other one done, and pay down the credit card. I do not have cell phone signal here nor high speed, so I am not sure one will even work here. if I put a cell in the window, mind you only one of them, I can get one bar but you cannot move the cell phone. I have never tried my kindle here yet. I am hoping it may get signal and work otherwise just a waste of money.

Re: Should I reformat my computer?

two things. one the program or whatever it is called gwxux keeps popping up in a window that says it has stopped working, and wants to find a solution online. I keep hitting ok, and every time I start the computer it is there again. I hope this is a windows program and not a bug. it does it on both computers.

two. I was searching for nova development who wrote my publisher program and I misspelled it. this message came up.
.net frame work file missing due to some harmful virus debug malware error 895-system 32.exe failure contact tech support. do not open browser to avoid corruption on registry system. call 1-888-582-6871.

it also after that brought up a blue screen. I did not call. thing is I got a similar error on the other computer. I think it was the time I did call the number and it went to india and they said they were Microsoft in india and wanted me to allow them access to my computer and to buytheir 3-400 dollar program to fix my computer.

I contacted staples, they sent my register receipt with my proof on it, am still waiting to hear back from nova for my key.

Re: 32.exe failure contact tech support
great so that means both of my computers are infected then. so I guess I will replace the hard drive on the newer one, and try to reformat this one. and why does everyones virus software not find the bugs??????

Re: Should I reformat my computer?
well.....I decided to try the file backup on my older comp first. worked ok. thought it would ask me if I wanted to have multiple drives on the 2T backup drive but it didn't. so now I have those done, I have been working on trying to get the bad computer files. because I would not get online it would not let me run the setup so.... after some time being frustrated I figured out I can copy and paste to a new folder on the T drive. so I have been doing that for my files. have to do them in sections. I got the docs, and pics, working on music now, have some video and other files listed separately that I need to get. what I am wondering is if there is a way to get my art publisher program copied, I cannot find the disc. I have to wait for the other stuff to finish. I am happy to at least be able to copy and paste much of my documents and pics.

Re: Should I reformat my computer?

most Windows software you can't simply copy - it has to be 'installed' and you can only do that with your original install disk. But, some do work by just copying.. Only one way to find out!
