So, I've got this kitten....

And he's quite the handful.  For the most part, when he misbehaves, I can distract him with a toy, and he's fine.  However, we've had him over a week, and I swear if I've gotten 4 hours of sleep each night since then, it's a lot.  Apparently he loves me, thinks I'm his Mommy, and therefore feels the need to make sure my face, especially my eyes, are VERY clean, ALL night.  He doesn't do this AT ALL during the day, only at night.  I've tried blowing in his face, holding his face in my hand, thwapping his nose with 2 fingers, and tossing him across the room.  None of these have deterred him one bit, as it seems my eyes are very, very dirty.  Last night, I was so desperate for sleep, I put him in his carrier, but he managed to Houdini himself out, and about 45 minutes later he was licking and nibbling on my eyelid again.

Anyone have any advice on how to convince him that I am not in need of a late night facial scrub?  Please don't tell me to close the bedroom door, we live in a studio, we don't have on.  I'm stumped.

Someone?  Anyone?  I'm so sleep deprived it's not even funny anymore.

Re: So, I've got this kitten....

how bout leaving a warm shirt or something that smells like you in the kittens bed before sleepy time?

i was reading that bitter apple spray helps...but it seems mean and you'd have to spray it on yourself...and smell like sour apples. blah...

The shirt in the bed doesn't work, he wants flesh.  I've come to the conclusion that he's a zombie, and he's trying to eat my brains.  I started putting Tea Tree Oil on my face, thinking the strong camphor smell would keep him away.  It does, until around 3:30 am when I start sweating, then he's back.  I don't know why, but I'm having a hard time finding bitter apple.  I have 2 PetSmarts near me, and neither of them seem to carry it.  I'm stopping at a PetCo this afternoon to see if they have it.  (uiu0tppp vg0c v <----Sid says hi)

Last night I was so tired, I locked him in the bathroom for a few hours.  That was a bad idea, Cassie can't hold it that long.

Walmart online has it...you said there's a Walmart near you...maybe they carry it there as well?  Well at least the tea tree oil will help in keeping your skin blemish free *lol*  I heart that stuff.

I remember sleeping over at my cousins house when her cat was still a baby.  He tortured me all night.  Licking my fingers and nose, biting at my toes...I got absolutely no sleep that night so I feel your pain.

How about a sleep mask with some tea tree oil on that?  I'd be wearing welding goggles by now.

my cat licks my ottoman and the little carpet by the sliding glass doors. and she sucks on blankets to the point theyre full of holes. it may not sound like its bad but when your ottoman is soak and wet with drewl and your  chanel blanket looks like its been through a cat fight its pretty bad.  i cant get her to stop that either and shes 14. at least its not my face in the middle of the night i guess.

poor girl! I was kept awake at night when my cat was a kitten and he would meow at the closed bedroom door all night. We kicked that by letting him in for a few and then kicking him out by saying night night kitty. I know some hardware/garden centers who have pet supplies or pest removers may have that bitter apple, also some grocery stores do, so you might want to check there. If you can't find it, there's always the internet. The eye mask with the stuff on it sounds like a good idea.

I need more info on how your cat got out of its cage to help you with keeping it in. How did it get out?(do you even know?), what kind of cage is it?(wire, plastic?)

Re: So, I've got this kitten....

i was just reading a 'cats only' pet help forum.  someone had at one time, the same lick problem. when they are taken away from their mother's too early they do that. it's like they need to still nurse even though they are older.

can you buy her a bottle, put milk in it and maybe let her get the 'need to nurse' *lick* feeling out? maybe a pacifier?

no solution found yet that i have scanned through. give it a looksie!

p.s. read more - - i guess it isn't that uncommon but yet, no real reason why kittens do it.

Re: So, I've got this kitten....

See, I keep finding the same stuff.  Lots of explanations as to *why* he does it, but not much in the way of how to get him to stop.  General interwebz consensus seems to be that it's "cute", and that it means he loves me.  Great.  Love me after I've gotten a full night's sleep, thanks.  I never thought I'd have to say "no, thanks, I don't want to make out" to my cat before, lol.

I don't think the bottle feeding is going to cut it, only because he feels the need to do this for hours on end, and I just don't have that kind of spare time to bottle feed something completely capable of eating on it's own.

According to the store manager at PetCo this afternoon, The company that made "Bitter Apple" has gone out of business.  The only places left to get it would be websites with back stock.  That's disappointing.  There wasn't anything else that I'd feel comfortable putting on my face for overnight.  I'm going to try the store manager's suggestion and try straight lemon juice tonight (Freckle Juice, anyone?)  If that doesn't work, I'll order a bottle online tomorrow.

As for the carrier, I have this one.  The first time, he managed to undo the velcro and some of the zipper, and break out through the top.  The second time, I rigged the top so he couldn't undo it, so he just tore a hole in the side.  This afternoon, I bought one like this.  If he can break out of that, I'm sending him to the circus or something.

Re: So, I've got this kitten....

I'm agreeing with Bare on the idea of a sleepmask.... Both my (4 years old and maybe 3 months old) kitties love to lick eyes if they get close enough, but they don't seek us out in the night to do it... if you hide the smell (I'm guessing it's the tears?) then I imagine he'd not bug you... you could even spray the mask with something he doesn't like and not have to put it on your skin...
