This is one useful tool - System Information for Windows

Hello everyone.

I recently ran across this utility and I'm highly impressed. This is an absolute must have for checking out Windows operating systems, better than Belarc Advisor. The list of things that it can do is too long to list so here's a cut and paste.

SIW (System Information for Windows) performs computer configuration analysis and diagnostics.
SIW can create a report file (CSV, HTML, TXT or XML), and is able to run in batch mode (for Asset Management, PC Audit, Software Inventory and Hardware Inventory).
SIW gives detailed information about your computer properties and settings, detailed specs for:
• Software: Operating System, Installed Software and Hotfixes, Processes, Services, Users, Open Files, System Uptime, Installed Codecs, Licenses.
• Hardware: Motherboard, Sensors, BIOS, CPU, chipset, PCI/AGP, USB and ISA/PnP Devices, Memory, Video Card, Monitor, Disk Drives, CD/DVD Devices, SCSI Devices, S.M.A.R.T., Ports, Printers.
• Network: Network Cards, Network Shares, currently active Network Connections, Open Ports.
• Tools: Password Recovery, Reveal lost passwords hidden behind asterisks, Product Keys and Serial Numbers (CD Key), MAC Address Changer, Shutdown / Restart.
• Real-time monitors: CPU, Memory, Page File usage and Network Traffic.
SIW is a standalone utility that does not require installation (Portable Freeware) - one less installed program on your PC as well the fact that you can run the program directly from an USB flash drive, from a floppy, from a network drive or from a domain login script.

I've found that the open port scanning utility is useful for finding backdoor trojans and the process listing can help determine if there is any malicious processes going on.

The password reveal feature is a trip too;-)

It's free unless you want the technician or business version. Download the English primary version which should be labeled siw.exe. Those that work on computers for a living should place this on a USB flash drive. Download size is 1.29 MB.

Enjoy.

Just copy or send it over to your flash drive. If you choose to select where to save downloads, navigate to your flash drive.

Have you tried it out yet? Pretty nifty, eh. It's quick as heck too.

I love this thing.

Thanks ashton. I downloaded it last night and was very intrigued by it. It does work quick, but I'm really like I'll be able to use this to really learn about the computer. Since I have forgotten quite a bit.

hey guys, as ignorant as i am about this tech, it's been proving to be quite intriguing! do you think i'd be able to find the id they ask for when they say your copy of windows is counterfeit, which they do, but mine isn't....juliek
