Multiply your body weight by 16. That will give you your base caloric intake. There are about 3,500 calories in 1 pound of fat.
So if you want to lose 1 pound per week, you need to consume 500 less calories per day. This will vary slightly person-to-person and will also vary slightly based upon your metabolic rate. Sprinkle in a little exercise and you have a recipe for a healthier lifestyle.
This is not a diet. It is a lifestyle. Diets tend to NOT work because they are not permanent. The very term "I'm going on a diet" suggests it is a temporary process.
What are your tips for taking off pounds successfully and sensibly?
One of the best tips is to change all your liquids to water or zero calorie drinks ( such as diet soda or flavored water, although I suggest to have the water much more often than these :) ). I've seen people lose a lot of weight by starting with this.
Some people consume over 600 calories a day in liquids alone.
How true this is!! A year ago I was drinking 5-6 cans of soda a day and then I switched to diet soda and lost 7 pounds in the first 10 days. Now if I just need to switch to all water....
What really works for me is jogging. Jogging, a little bit of weights, and the pounds just melt away! Good tip bout the caloric intake, though! I've never heard that one before.
I need to do something. I've been eating like a hog lately. Had lost some weight and a couple of sizes, now I'm up a size and feel miserable.
Not good for my IBS either. Been bummed about it, obviously.
here's a page of "secrets" I wrote a few years ago <click> ;)
...the amount of food i can put away at one sitting and knows my sweet tooth is documentary material, yet, i am a toothpick! there is no way i could ever create a caloric deficit with the way i eat. i am the poster child for genetic freak....
I hate you!! haha! kidding.
I purposely did not mention genetic disposition. It certainly does exist. Having a body that hoards every calorie it can and wrestles it away to be stored as fat is demoralizing and I didn't want that to be an excuse. I myself am genetically predisposed to store calories and be very efficient. My dad is considered overweight as was his mom, my mom, and also her mom. That's why I work out like I do and that's why I must watch every calorie.
Those that are "efficient" who say they are genetically obese simply have to eat fewer calories to lose weight. That is unless there's a medical problem.
I know I could live indefinitely on 1000 calories (or less) a day. You see - I'm highly evolved. I'm ready for the nuclear holocaust. All I need is a little bit of water and some tree bark, some ants and I'm all set.
BTW... have you tried the Hawaiian Blizzard at DQ??? O.M.G. Smack me.
Hey, that's a great article, well written.
People trying to lose weight should also write down everything they eat (and drink), at least for a little while. I think most people underestimate how much they eat during the day, especially if you're a nibbler. Do that, change habits slowly and you'll lose weight. I have an underactive thyroid and even I managed to lose 20 lbs after having my last child.
Thank you for specifying body FAT. Too many people focus on "weight" as the problem. I do understand wanting to see progress on the scales, but a tape measure showing a smaller number is even more satisfying!
I just drink a lot of water (I drink at least 1.5 liters a day!) and keep active, even when I'm tired. Oh! Speaking of which, it's also helpful to get a good amount of rest. I find that when I don't get a good amount of rest, I'll eat a lot more.
