Too Much T.V. & Web Bad for Kids Health?

I think we can all agree that too much television watching, video game playing, and/or web surfing leads to less and less physical activity. This researchers behind yet another child study have reason to believe too much of these also leads to obesity and smoking. Smoking? Oh, and also sex at an early age!

The studies offered strong evidence that children who get more media exposure are more likely to become obese, start smoking and begin earlier sexual activity than those who spend less time in front of a screen, the researchers said.

Again, I think a good percentage of this can be eliminated and/or countered with a little parental involvement in a child's life.

We use the DVR, which allows us to fast forward through commercials and previews for shows that may be inappropriate for our mini.

What are your strategies for limiting screen time at your house? Do you make a differentiation between TV and computer time? How do you handle advertising and how much exposure your kids have to media messages?

I agree with you 2na and also think its key to find out who your child's friends are as well. Usually what the friends are doing and how they behave isn't so different than the child themself.

I have satellite instead of regular cable because I can block channels and program shows. I usually watch whatever my kids are watching so I know what's filling their heads. The internet, I ration that out. They can only be online for an hour and I have all their passwords. I only have one kid that's into video games and I make sure it's age appropriate. I feel we wouldn't be here if we all lived by statistics.

We have an exchange plan in our house. For every half hour of TV or computer time they want they have to do 1/2 of outside time, reading, writing, board games, sports, etc. Basically something that promotes thought and imagination. We limit computer time to half hour a day for the 9 year old and 1 hour for the 14 year old. The toddler doesn't watch TV at all. If something inappropriate comes on we excuse them or turn it off. We also talk a lot about what they are watching and reading so that they know the difference between what is real and what is not. I'm not sure if it's physically bad for their health but I do think it can be bad for their brains. We have created a generation of children that have to be entertained. When I was little we got kicked outside to find our own amusement and did just fine. We had to problem solve and use our imaginations. We traveled without n Ipod, portable DVD player, and Nintendo DS and still made it there in one piece. Sometimes we even learned the alphabet along the way :)

AAP academy in United States strongly recommends:
“NO TV for kids under 2 and an average of 2 hours of quality TV programs for kids older than 2”
