The company I am working at is very basic with computer knowledge. I work at the corporate office and we have about 20 offices across the eastern half of the US. I am a sophomore in college and I am interning as a sole computer guy.
My boss wants me to find a way to send an email out that has a link to a website and when the employees click on the link, it will send our corporate office all of the information on their computer, such as what computer and who is on that computer. So that we can keep track of where everything is.
I was just curious if this was possible because I do not know how to do this
There are asset-management systems that you can purchase that work like this.
We've used LanSweeper in the past, and at the time it did the job for us.
Remember that there is more to this than just slapping in some software. You need to implement, test, etc, but you also have to inform the users, have a policy on what information is/is not collected, etc. When we first implemented this type of system we had to run everything by HR and get buy-in from all the leadership. People WILL complain as if you are violating their constitutional rights (of which they have none if these are company computers), but you do need to inform them.
i think you can specify a range of address for scanning - as long as you have connectivity to that range it should work. it might make more sense to have a server at each/some locations though, if you have slow WAN links.
I think Lansweeper has a free version that you can try out & play with.
that is what i remember from using the product many years ago.. I could be wrong and/or the product may have changed. I think you may have to read-up on the product or try it to know for sure.
