Re: Two albums this year?

Sounds like they've been hanging out with Chris Carrabba.

Re: U2 - No Line On The Horizon, Free online tomorrow.

The whole album will be streamed for free on U2's MySpace starting at 2:00a.m. PT. 5:00a.m. ET. Friday Feb 20th. This comes as a response to the album being leaked onto torrent sites after Universal Australia accidentally released the album for digital download two weeks early.

Edit: Link www.myspace.com/u2.

Edit 2: And so the streaming starts.

Edit 3: So I guess I'll have to start writing a track by track review.

One thing I notice from this album, is that nothing really sticks out as a classic U2 song or a song that I would really like to hear live. I kind of just find this album ok, but not quite the work of art I was expecting considering the hype surrounding it, the reviews, the time it took to make, and the amount of tracks they said they had to chose from. Maybe they rose the bar too high for themselves, maybe they’re losing their touch as songwriters or are running out of ideas, or maybe I’m just overly critical, but It actually makes me feel as though How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb was a little underrated in retrospect(except for all the Grammy’s it won, but you know what I mean).

well here are my thoughts, and i do share yours too; (1) they are getting older. i don't think they are running out of decent material, i think they are just 'still' trying to stay ahead of the pack and stand out - - which is a moot point because they already do. they don't need to create bad music to do that. (2) anything U2 does, whether it be an appearance at an award show red carpet, a rally, new music, or just seen in public - - is always always over hyped. almost more than the Stones. their record label company snafu & the story hit MSN finally today.

It's not their age that makes me think they‘ve lost their touch, in fact that should give them a huge lyrical library to pull from. It’s just that their judgment has been pulled through the mud by their thirst to compete with these younger bands which quite frankly aren’t worth competing with, and by every critic(which absolutely think this album is the best thing since sliced bread) who only wants more and more experimentation instead of better songs. Not experimentation for the sake of making better music like Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, but just for the sake of experimentation like Zooropa and Pop(which critics loved and most fans hated).

And again I don’t think the albums completely terrible because there are some great new ideas in the songs, it just leaves me with a “Five years to make this” feeling. It seems like they made a bunch of interesting instrumentals and then threw in some random lyrics at the last minute, just so lyrically unfinished for an album that took such a long time to make with so many possible songs to choose and pull from(they said they wrote about sixty songs for this album).

But then again, maybe it’s all just me. I may be comparing this too much against The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. But they where the ones that made the comparison in the first place and Eno, Lanios and the critics keep pushing that comparison, I just can‘t for the life of me find where this album compares to those two masterpieces. I must either have no taste in music, the critics are all just experimentation freaks with no real interest in songwriting like I said or maybe I’m just overly critical, but I only criticize because I care.
