USB Help

A few months ago I had a melt down with my PC that required a complete system wipe.  I am just now, slowly, fixing some of the problems.  My new video & sound cards came in the mail today.  ~happydances~

Before melt down I had saved a bunch of files on a small USB flash drive.  The files are all still there & the USB drive itself works fine ... I just plugged it into my MAC to test it.  However, it will not upload or even read on my PC.  I've already checked the BIOS, and the USB is enabled.

I'm not sure why this isn't working ... why my PC won't read the drive.  I'd like to try and figure this out mysel, rather than take it in to FireDog, GeekSquad, or some other place.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Smile

Re: USB Help

Sorry, I'm frustrated so I may have rambled.

I checked the flash on my MAC, and it works fine.

The USB on the PC will not read the flash or my MuVo Mp3 player.  The light lights up on the flash & the display comes up on the Mp3 player, but neither one of them come up under the removable storage devises section of My Computer.

How old is the Flash drive and Muvo player?

Older models are not neccisarily "plug and play" and require you to sometimes load the driver that comes with them and even the management tools in the case of some MP3 player devices

If you go to Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management,  can you see it then?

Re: USB Help

No, it's not there.  Even though the USB device says it's working, I think I'm missing an extra driver.  ~headdeask~  Now I'm either going to have to figure out a way to get the PC online & search for a driver, or I'm going to have to find someone with a good copy of XP to fix it.  ~sighs~  CRAP!

Ah well, it still works, I just can't load my saved preferences for some of the games I just reloaded.

Re: USB Help

There are a few things you can do here.

First and foremost, copy the data off the flash drive on the Mac and burn to a CD or keep it on the Mac HD.

Second, and you may flip here, do the following on the PC.

Go Start->Run->type in:

devmgmt.msc

or however you prefer to open device manager.

Scroll down to USB Serial Bus controllers, open it up (click the plus) and go through and right click each one and select uninstall. You want it so all USB selections are uninstalled under USB Serial Bus controllers.

Reboot.

Go back to devmgmt.msc (device manager) and reinstall the USB controllers.

Try your flash drive.

Still didn't work? It's possible you hosed the actual USB hardware in your meltdown. I imagine you have tried every port at this point, front and back. The way I got around this issue was to order one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=USB+Card

Two USB 2.0 ports cost as little as $5.99 and there is a four port for $7.99.

There are other other things you can try (I just realized I could have copied my instructions from the link...aaaaarrggghh). One method includes flashing the BIOS on the motherboard.

The reason why I suggest you copy the data off the flash drive is that you may want to reformat with Fat32 again.

Hope it helps.

Re: USB Help

Thank you SO much!  I'm going to try this later and see if it works.  (The man has the computer at the moment. ~L~)  In the mean time, yeah I am going to back everything up onto a disk just to have as a back-up copy.

I'll keep you posted.  Wink

 Ashton:

Sorry for not updating sooner, but I was only just now able to try this.  The Man has been monopolizing the PC ever since he got his games back.  ~L~  I did just as you instructed, but the front 2 ports still don't work.  I don't remember if there's one on the back, but I'm going to try that one tomorrow.  I may just end up replacing the ports.

Thanks for all your help.  Smile

Re: USB Help (Ashton)

Too bad. :-(

It seems like in my experience, the front USB ports tend to go first. They are on separate connectors on the motherboard.

There are still a few options on the this link.

And you could always buy a USB hub or USB PCI card.

Good luck!
