What kinda car do you drive?

Re: What kinda car do you drive?

Well...my Bronco has died and gone to Ford heaven.   I was cruising down the highway, and lost power, and got enveloped in a huge cloud of smoke.   I immediately pulled over and jumped out....I thought the damn thing was on fire with all the smoke!!    Got it towed in (after a close to 5 hour wait for the tow truck) and the mechanic called a couple of days later with the fatal diagnosis.  There was a crack somewhere, he suspects the head, that allowed all the coolant to flow into the motor....with disastrous results.   Motor is gone.  Oh well...time to get something else now.

HA! just today, I got in the good ol '94 Saturn and started driving. about 200 yards away at a stop light it stalls. I start the engine again, it goes out again and won't start again. I try starting it a few more times before giving up and popping the hood. I check the oil and it's drip dry. The dip stick is shinny stainless steal. Turns out that when the oil got changed a few days ago, the guy didn't tighten down the oil plug and it fell off and the engine seized up (ball bearings melted themselfs and solidfied as a soilid non rotating chunk!!!). Good news, Penzoil will probably pay for repairs.

They better pay for repairs, as long as they admit fault! Do you need a new (or used) engine, or can that one be saved?

You may have some trouble if the cost to put in a new engine supercedes the value of the car... and I'd be careful to find out where the new engine comes from, could be a perfect engine from a same or similar car that had unrepairable body damage, or it could be an engine that has been beaten severely for about 200,000 miles and is on it's last breath already...

Good luck!

Re: What kinda car do you drive?

the engine might be saveable. And I'm sure that repairs will exceed the "value" of the car; but they still should make pay for repairs because it's still there fault..... and on the "beaten severely for 200,000" bit, this car has 228,000+ miles on the engine and has been driven hard. And until it's seizure yesterday, was far from dead.

and a bit on "value"; I never understand people talking about cars and houses in terms of "resaleable value". For one, there's way way to much emphasis these days on recycling, and people seem to miss that recycling is the least important of three steps. The other two being reduce and reuse. From this perpective, it's plainly better to put a new engine into the car, even if doing so costs 3-4 times as much as what you'd get from selling the car. just a thought.

I'm just saying you don't know how "big business" will view things... obviously they should be made to pay, but they could try to throw a check at you towards another car instead of trying to fix the existing one. And you could fight that if you wanted, cause it probably wouldn't be enough anyway... Glad to hear that the engine may be savable, that will likely make the rest easier.

228,000+ miles, that says something for Saturns, I guess.

The 82 Firebird I mentioned in an above post is worth nothing as far as "value", but I'll never get rid of it (even though I should, considering I'm paying for insurance and tags and it doesn't leave my garage) cause it's my baby and I have high hopes for a show-quality restoration someday...

Penzoil is going to pay for a $1,500 rebuilt engine!, I'll have to check the specs; but it sounds like a good deal.

Guess that's why they call it "Found On Road Dead".

Sorry, I know all cars have their problems, but I love that Ford joke.

Re: What kinda car do you drive?

You mean "F'd-up On Race Day?" Nah, I'm just kidding, all cars have problems these days. If I were to buy new or used it would likely be a GM like a Pontiac cause I like the G6 and G8, or a Toyota cause those damn cars almost never break. My wife's 97 Geo Prism (in reality a Toyota Corolla built for GM's defunct Geo division) just rolled over past 230,000 miles today. I drive it for work every day and it still gets me a respectable 25-27 MPG.

And I wasn't even sure you were old enough to drive, Adam14212. Ha ha, again just kidding with you.
