Windows XP Activation

Hi, I inherited a Gateway notebook computer with Windows XP a few years ago (I have another couple computers that I regularly use). Anyways, last year it stopped working and I wanted to get it working again for my daughter but can't get past Administrator. It has been asking me for the product key for Windows XP (everytime I tried to put it in it said it was invalid). Anyways, I did a couple of things to try to bypass it and now it says Windows XP is activated but when I hit Administrator to go into the computer it says I need to activate it. I have stuff on it that I can't get to and don't want to have to reformat it. And since it's a Notebook I don't have a disc drive (and no XP disc, I do have the product key). So I'm not sure what to do next, any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Lisa

Re: Windows XP Activation

You should be able to call Microsoft and have them activate it for you. Check this page how to get Windows XP activated. If Microsoft refuses/that does not work, your next best bet is to remove the drive, connect it as a secondary/slave to another computer, and extract your important (not backed up?!) data. Depending on your skill level, this may require professional help.

Re: Windows XP Activation
Windows XP is now officially dead to Microsoft. If that computer is connected to the internet, it isnt safe anymore.
