Xbox live

ok so the kids are addicted to Xbox live... just bought the year long subscription.. as of right now we are using the modem for our computer and moving it downstairs so they can play on the big screen tv...  my question is, since we cant get online while they are using modem what is the best way to solve this... should i buy another modem or use a router ? then someone told me I can buy a thing for the Xbox that makes it wireless.. what is the best way to make that work without my comuter modem?  i'm clueless.....

Re: Xbox live

probably the easiest thing is to buy a wireless router and EITHER a wireless adapter for your PC or the wireless adapter for the xBox.. My guess is the PC wireless adapter is going to be cheaper than the one for the xBox.. so plug the xbox into the router (which then connects to the modem) and connect the PC "wirelessly"..

you didnt say, but i assume you are using a highspeed cable/dsl modem. if that's the case, you cant just buy a second modem without paying for a second account anyway - so the router is probably going to be the only real solution..

if you're using a dialup/telephone modem, i dont even think anyone makes a router for that..

Re: Xbox live

I think the wirless adapter for the Xbox is about $90 - any suggestions for a brand for the PC adapter?  and yes we have cable high speed ..... so the router wont work without the adapter for either the pc or the xbox?  thats what I thought but kids tried to tell me otherwise.. and I didnt know you just couldnt buy another modem?

Re: Xbox live

Id suggest buying a wireless adapter made by the same company as the router youre going to buy (ie, linksys router AND adapter) You ought to be able to get a wireless router for under $50, and a USB wireless adapter for your computer for under $20.

The router will work fine without an adapter- but the thing is, unless you connect both the xbox and the computer via a hardwire....one of them will NEED an adapter. IF you have both items in the same room you can connect both with a hardwire. Im assuming theyre in different rooms, so the one that is not in the same room as the modem will need a wireless adapter. You will be connecting the router to your modem with a hardwire, and then you will hardwire to either the xbox, or the computer and use the wireless to connect to the other. m

Dont new computers come wireless ready with some kind of card or something?

Re: Xbox live

Only if the box says "wireless ready" !

Most laptops do, i would venture that most desktops do not - but again, it depends.
