Yet Another Facebook Suggested Friends Thread!

Seriously though, I am really trying to understand how FaceBook is coming up with suggested friends. I have people showing up with no common ground in any way shape or form with me.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care nor do I care if I am popping up as a suggestion for someone else but I can’t find anything that explains the lists that come up and there just has to be some sort of logic that I’m not getting. I’ve seen posts here asking about the topic but the responses don’t gel with what I see.

I also seem to get more suggestions for women and many of them are what one would classify as pretty, beautiful, etc. and in a lot of cases in fairly revealing attire- is this simply because I’m listed as a 50 year old male and someone somewhere on FaceBook decided we are all dogs and want to find women to connect with? Is it possible for you to “push” yourself out there in order to garner attention? Some of the women showing up for me list their occupations as “models”- are they somehow trying to advertise their way into the right person?

Anyway, thanks for reading and  I’d love to know others thoughts on this.

i know that about 98% of my 'suggested friends' are friends-of-friends of mine, but that other 2%, i'm just as perplexed as you are. I hadnt noticed that i'm getting a lot of goodlooking females though - maybe because i'm in a different demographic than you are.

As taken directly from the Facebook Help page:

What are Suggestions?

Suggestions is a feature that helps you connect with people and Pages...

Suggestions is a feature that helps you connect with people and Pages you are likely to know, as well as engage with your confirmed friends on Facebook. Facebook calculates Suggestions based on the networks you are a part of, mutual friends, work and education information, contacts imported using the Friend Finder, and many other factors.

Since this feature is automatic, it occasionally identifies people that you do not know or do not want to be friends with. Please keep in mind that Facebook will never send friend requests to the users that show up in this list.

Simply put suggestions come from your friends, friends-of-friends, any groups you've joined, anything you've "liked," networks you've joined, any games you play, basically anything you join/participate in/sign up for on Facebook.

I wish I would see more of these type of suggestions. The suggestions I get have none of that in common with me at all! I don't understand it. A lot of times I get suggestions for people that have maybe only 7 or so friends, not in many groups, sometimes they do not even have a picture and they have nothing in common with me at all! Other times I get the "model" girls too, with the provactive poses all airbrushed (and I am a woman) I get mostly women also. I also get alot of foreign people mostly arabic. I made sure to list my highschool, current neighborhood and neighborhood that I grew up in, I made a new email addy for FaceBook that nobody knows. I dont "like" too many things and joined groups that are only for things local.  I wish I would see more "friends of friends" or people from my old highschool, or old neighborhood. It seems impossible to figure out their methods!

If you click on the X'ed box next to the suggested person it will eliminate them from your rotating list of suggestions.  You can also go to the friends page through the account drop down menu and see a larger sampling of the suggested people in the rotation.  On this page you can also eliminate people that you no longer want to see in your suggestions.

I've X'ed certain people out numerous times and they keep popping back up.
