Your Smartphone Is About To Get A Whole Lot Smarter

If you thought being connected to the web via Wi-Fi on your smartphone was a blast, wait till your smartphone has this new chip inside. It was developed by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) over in Asia. It will make your smartphone a powerhouse radio station, able to send data 1000 times faster than bluetooth can.

Keep an ear open for the chip named the "VIRTUS". This chip so far has gained 16 international patents and received two best chip design awards among other accolades. It will be able to broadcast to other devices at the speed of two gigabits per second. That is not a misprint. Current Wi-Fi in the "N" mode broadcasts at 450 mega bits per second if you have the right router. But this little VIRTUS chip smokes Wi-Fi wireless "N" like a cherry-tobacco filled pipe in the mouth of Granpa.

Seriously, if this chip is going to be headed for a smartphone, even the upcoming Wi-Fi standard, "AC" is going to be slower. The upcoming Wi-Fi standard is three times faster than today's wireless "N". Just doing the numbers, that is 1350 mega bits per second ( Mbps ). That equals out to "just" 1.35 gigabits per second. The VIRTUS will put out two gigabits per second, beating the pants off of the next Wi-Fi.

Internet SpeedSo what will be the result of having all this power in your mobile device? One will be the newfound fear of people sharing their music and video files in the blink of an eye. The RIAA and others are still trying to make people pay for downloading copyrighted videos and music. This chip will make it magnitudes easier to share a whole album of songs in a second or less. Eighty MP3 music files or 250 megabytes, can be shared in a second. Video will be able to be broadcast in real time and in high definition. Interactive gaming between devices is another benefit, making the upcoming smartphone the digital equivalent of the board game "Battleship".

The VIRTUS chip gets its speed by broadcasting at extremely high frequencies ( EHF ). The chip operates between 30 and 300 gigahertz. An added benefit is that the chip will use less energy because of the EHF engineering. It is the first chip of its kind to use a low power 60 gigahertz chipset. But all you file sharers will not be happy about the wait. The super speed chip is not destined to be on sale for another two years.
